White 15
Grey 13

Could the trophy finally be brought back to Richmond after two long years in Barron's iron Tidewater grasp??

The top two teams all season, with their only loss at the hands of the other team, White (Bio) and Grey (Puwl) squared off once again. Here's the history - White won a close one against a short-handed Grey squad early in the season, then received a 15-7 thrashing against Grey later. Coming off this W, and with a significant edge in reg-season point differential, Grey was the favorite to make it three years in a row for captain Barron. To compare teams: Both teams had excellent depth and versatility, there was an element of the classic Ultimate battle of quickness (Bio: Tim MacGougan, Brian Hasty, Aaron Richards) versus height. (Puwl: David Salisbury, Christian Lesnett, Michael Clapman).

White, pumped after Tom Banner's pre-game pep yelling tirade, got off to a quick start on this windy day by getting the first up-wind break. Grey mixed it up defensively with zone and man d's, forcing White to methodically move the disc up the field. White was able to use MacGougan's scoobers, swings, and shots throught the cup to break the Z. The poppers (Tom Banner, Emily Tombes, Aaron Mullins) were finding the space and contributing hugely to White's patient attack. White took half 8-6.

In the second half, Grey immediately opened it up with two quick Christian-to-David hucks to tie it up 8-8. White regained control for a 10-8 edge, taking advantage of some swills caught in the wind. White got a huge grab when Adam Miller (me) chucked it deep to Brittany Taylor, who picked it just before it hit the ground. Tim Carroll and Patrick Liu contributed a couple huge (get up!) D's. White, now facing an exclusive man (ok, "person", Bill Karn) -d, then used an effective dump-swing-flow cut strategy to make a mini-run for 14-11 edge. But Grey would not go down easily and rolled off the next two in a couple marathon points to make it 14-13 that exhausted both sides (or maybe just me!) Fatigued and not wanting to extend into an uncapped win-by-two overtime, White worked it up and punched it in for the game winner. It was a hard fought game, played with a mixture of spirit and intensity.

I'll keep the trophy safe, cya'll later! Great season GRUL!

Adam

This game was a lot closer than the score would indicate. Every point was contested, but Grey ultimately came up on the scoring end on more of those points. It was a windy day, and both teams played a lot of zone defense. Schutte for Gold and Salisbury for Grey were the bane of the cups, with long strides and endless break swings. Grey took half at 8-6, I think, getting one or two upwind breaks. In the second half, Grey used efficient zone offense to take advantage of nearly every Gold mistake.

This game was a knock-down, drag-out brawl. Both teams were nigh unstoppable in the early going, but Grey rode the Christian Lesnett to Michael Clapman connection to an 8-6 halftime lead. In the second half, Azalea refused to roll over, keeping the margin to 2-3 points with crisp offensive points. Grey got a break off a Michael Clapman layout D to open the lead to 12-8. Azalea scored almost immediately to bring it to 12-9. That's where the comeback ended, though, as Grey ran off the last three points to close it out. This was a well-played game all around.

Nate Ashley and I showed up late from Topsail Island. We got destroyed by the ocean, it was awesome. When we got to the game, gold had 8 players, and red had 7 (4 guys + 3 ladies). red was winning 5-2. gold came back to go up 11-7, at which point red made a run to tie it at 12. gold scored twice, then points were traded until gold won 15-13. bobby blackstone had a big lay out d.

Miserable traffic on I-64 delayed the start of the game, and intense heat threatened to exhaust everyone before the game even started. Grey had only one woman, and Red had all four. Red graciously allowed Grey to pick up a second woman in order to play 5-2. (Thanks Christy!)

Grey pulled to start, and Red marched right down the field. Grey opened a 7-3 lead, and called timeout to rest. Red scored a couple more, but the score was about 8-5(6?) at half. Points went back and forth in the second half, and Grey had a 10-7 lead. Red stormed back to tie the score at 11. That run was all that Red had, though, and Grey ran off the final 4 points.

There was a lot of fuss made over one call in particular, and I'd like to clarify what happened. Carter Mize got a layout d on Keith Stanley, but Keith made a call (on the same play) that resulted in a subsequent turnover for Grey. There was a lot of discussion about it at the time, but based on what he thought happened, Keith made the right call. If Carter had caught the disc, whether inbounds or out, and set the disc down, it should have been a turnover. Further clarification would be that if Carter had not actually caught the disc, or caught it and lost it upon contact with the ground, it would not have been a turnover. Also bear in mind that this paragraph is a lot longer than the actual discussion that took place on the field, but there seemed to be a lot of confusion and ill will about the call, and I just wanted to set the record straight.
